Vintage Philips Cassette Recorder, Repurposed Into a 12V Bluetooth Speaker

This Philips cassette recorder caught my eye with its solid, no-nonsense design and those unmistakable chunky transport buttons. Made in the Netherlands in the late 1970s to early 1980s, it originally lived as a portable tape recorder for music, voice notes, and everyday recordings. The gentle wear on the casing, softened edges, and subtle fading all show the life it’s already lived, and none of that has been hidden.

When I found it, it was no longer functional, but the character was far too good to lose. I repurposed it into a fully working Bluetooth speaker, powered by a reliable 12V system, while keeping the original exterior almost entirely intact. The flip-down stand, sliding knobs, bold Philips branding, and even the cassette window are all still there, now paired with modern wireless audio.
